One of the often quoted signs that your spiritual awaking has begun is that you start to think that the world, and the way it works, is crazy.
Crazy, crazy, crazy, the more you think about it the crazier it seems.
If you are in the early stages of spiritual awaking you will probably fear that it is you who is going crazy. De Mello discusses this in his usual upfront manner, “Do you know one sign that you’ve woken up? It’s when you are asking yourself, “Am I crazy or all of them crazy.” Certifiable lunatics! The only reason we’re not locked up in an institution is that there are so many of us. So we’re crazy. We’re living on crazy ideas about love, about relationships, about happiness, about joy, about everything. We’re crazy to the point, I’ve come to believe, that if everybody agrees on something, you can be sure it’s wrong!”
If you have traveled further along the road, you will know that it is the world that is crazy and if you can accept that with the knowledge that “All is well, all is well“, then you are making considerable progress.
For now the world is meant to be crazy – but you don’t have to be. You are not meant to be crazy too. As my mother would ask, when we were young, “Would you put your hand in the fire just because your sister did?“. Why would you do crazy things just because the world is crazy?
Wake up! Wake up!
